Small But Strong

Tris setting a new standard for shirt girls everywhere and breaking the statistic.
Being a short girl myself,
I have been judged by my size.
What they fail to see is that just because I am small,
doesn't mean that I am weak.
I am smart and I have my own strengths.
One being that everyone underestimates me.
A big thanks to author Veronica Roth for making her main character small.

Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent is the first book in the series by Veronica Roth. The book is written about a utopia of sorts. There are 5 factions that make up this city. Each faction values a different trait that they believe is what is important in life and believe that the other faction's traits are what causes uproar, and problems.

Abnegation believes is selflessness. To put others needs ahead of their own. They believe that thinking of yourself and being selfish is the downfall to society. They are the leaders because they put everyone's needs above their own.

Candor believes in honesty. They feel that if you are honest (frankly so even) that you will have nothing to hide because secrets and lies are the downfall to society. They believe dishonesty makes evil possible.

Erudite values intelligence above all else. They feel that the lack of knowledge inevitably leads to lack of understanding and lack of understanding disconnect. Disconnect leads to conflict and the only logical solution to conflict is knowledge.

Dauntless value being brave. They believe that cowardice is to blame for the worlds injustices. They believe that peace is hard-won and that you have to fight for peace.

Amity value peace. To have peace you must trust, be self-sufficient, forgive, and be kind.

Each child is raised in with their parents in their factions. In Tris's case, she grew up in Abnegation. All the children from all the factions attend school together until they turn 16. Each year, all the 16 year olds go though an aptitude test (a simulation) which is to tell them what faction they belong with. 24 hours later they go through the choosing ceremony where each 16 year old must choose a faction. They have the freedom of choice, even if their test says one faction, they can still choose a different one.

Once they choose a faction and the ceremony comes to an end, the initiates (the 16 year old's) must go with their chosen factions to go through initiation, and training. If you don't make initiation then you become factionless. Factionless are considered the scum. Looked down on. No one wants to be Factionless.

Warning spoilers ahead.

Divergent follows the story of a girl, Tris, who must choose her own path in life. She was raised Abnegation but always struggles with being selfless like the Abnegation should be. When she takes her aptitude test, her world turns upside down. She was told that the test wasn't conclusive for her. That this means she is something else all together, Divergent. She is told that being Divergent is dangerous and that she must never tell anyone that she is. Her test instructor erased her test results and reported that she tested Abnegation in order to protect her.

During the choosing ceremony her brother chooses to abandoned their upbringing as Abnegation and choose Erudite. Tris is shocked by this because he seemed to be the most selfless person she ever met. She feels betrayed that he kept this secret form her. But she too abandons Abnegation for Dauntless. She feels that Dauntless is her best bet, where she must belong.

Their father is angered by their choices but of course can't say anything because they are rushed off to be with their chosen factions. Their mother however smiles approvingly and loving to them.

Tris finds that Dauntless is harder than she expected but freeing. She learns to fight, shoot guns, and be brave. During initiation they must face 3 stages, and still only 10 initiates will become members. The rest will become factionless.

Tris finds friends that stick beside her through initiation. They stick up for one another and help each other out. Slowly she changes. She tattoo's herself. The first, 3 birds flying towards her heart. One for each of her family members that she left behind when she left Abnegation. The second tattoo being the Dauntless symbol. The third was done in secret, the symbol of Abnegation, the faction she left behind because she feels it'll always be a part of her.

The other transfer initiates (those from other factions like Tris) have found it hard to leave their families behind. Some cry at night when they think no one can hear. During stage 2 of initiation they must go through simulations to face their fears. This leaves the initiates on edge and touchy. Tris however refuses to break down. She begins to think that there's something wrong with her.

After a week and a half, all factions have visiting day. This is when the initiates Families can come visit them. Most families of those who transferred Factions don't visit because they feel betrayed. Tris is surprised when her mother shows up. Her mother supports her and loves her still. Tris begins to think that her mother wasn't always Abnegation but possibly Dauntless. Her mother tells her that she knows that Tris is Divergent and that she must be careful. She gets the same warning again, that it's dangerous to be Divergent but her mother refuses, like everyone else who knows about it, to tell her more about it. Instead her mother asks Tris to go to her brother in Erudite and have him research the serum used in the aptitude test. When Tris asks why her mother doesn't just go visit him herself, she finds that Erudite will not allow Abnegation into their compound headquarters so it must be Tris that goes.

Only 3 people know that Tris is Divergent. Her mother. The test instructor, who is also the Dauntless tattoo artist. And Four, her Dauntless initiation instructor. All have warned her to be careful and keep the attention off herself.

The time comes for stage 3 of the initiation process. Each initiate must go into the fear landscape and face all their fears. One after another. After which they will be ranked. At the end, they will get their final ranking to find out if they make Dauntless membership or will forever be factionless. Tris faces less fears than others and overcomes them faster. She is congratulated by the Dauntless leaders and Four. She is told that she made membership and all members are getting a tracking advice implanted in them via shot. This is in case they go missing and must be found. At least this is what they are told. Tris nervously agrees, after all this is what shes worked hard for.

During the celebration dinner, ranks are posted. Tris is surprised to find that she ranked over all #1. This means she gets to pick her job within the Dauntless compound, before all the other initiates. This is a good thing because she can pick a job far enough away from the leaders too keep off their radar as a Divergent but also give her a decent job.

That night she wakes up to the sound of shuffling. She finds her friends are getting dressed. When she tries to talk to them she realizes that the whole dorm is dressing with blank stares on their faces. They don't realize when they are doing, like sleepwalkers. Tris follows her instinct and follows suit, trying to match every movement they make in fear of being found out that she is Divergent.

They go into rooms, dress in all black uniform, arm themselves with guns and get on the train. They go into Abnegation compound and end up attacking and killing Abnegation. Tris finds Four wide awake and realizes that he too is Divergent. They make a run for it but end up caught by Divergent soldiers and taken to Jeanine the Erudite leader, who is behind the attack. She had developed the so called trackers that all (but the leaders) of Dauntless had been injected with that day. Turns out they were a device that allowed her to put everyone through a real life simulation and do what she wanted.

Jeanine injects Four with a different device that she created just for Divergent's and put him under her control. He then attacks Tris, almost chocking her to death until Jeanine commands him to stop and had her soldiers take him to the control room to monitor the simulation program.

Tris is knocked out and when she wakes up, she finds herself facing one of her worst fears, but in reality this time. She's in a glass box that is slowly filling with water so that she will drown. She tried to escape but is too weak from blood loss from being shot. Luckily she is saved by her mother who shoots and breaks the glass freeing Tris. They make a run for it. This is when Tris's suspicions of her mother being Dauntless before Abnegation are proven true when she sees her mothers Dauntless tattoo. She also discovers that her mother too is Divergent and the reason she choose to Abnegation, thinking it was the safest.

They try to escape the Dauntless sleepwalking soldiers but they can't lead them back to the group of Abnegation in hiding. Tris's mom tells her to run and get to safety while she distracts the soldiers. Tris ends up watching her mother die. Before she can make it to safety she is stopped by a soldier, Will her friend. She doesn't want to have to shoot him and tries talking him out of shooting her and letting her go but he isn't himself and she has no choice but to shoot and kill him.

She makes it to safety, finding her father, brother, Four's father and many neighbors. She has to deliver the news of her mothers death to her brother and father. After they come up with a plan to split up. A few will go with her to the Dauntless compound and shut down the simulation while the other run to safety to Amity outside the city gates.

With her she takes her brother, fathers and Four's father despite her protests. She leads them to the compound where they have to encounter many Dauntless initiate task's to get in. Jump onto a moving train. Jump off a moving train onto a roof. Jump off the roof from 7 stories high into a hole where a net is waiting to catch them. This is the back way into the compound and the safest.

They encounter many soldiers and have to fight back by shooting them. Tris finds Peter, her arch enemy and fellow initiate made member who tried to kill her, awake and not under the simulation. She shoots him in his shooting arm, rendering him useless and threatening his life if he doesn't tell her where the control room is.

She leaves her brother and Four's father behind to watch over Peter while her and her father goes to shut down the simulation. When they reach the floor the control is on they are met at the elevator by soldiers with guns ready to shoot. They shoot the soldiers down but more are headed their way. Tris's father leads them down a hall away from Tris and she watches him die like she did her mother. But it wasn't for nothing because she makes it to the control room where she finds Four. Four puts a gun to her head and she keep trying to talk him out of the simulation. She knows his brain is stronger because he is Divergent. Just when she thought she was about to die at the hand of the man whom she loves, he drops the gun and wakes up.

Together they shut down the simulation and take the hard drive with them so the simulation can't be turned on again. Four isn't happy to see his father waiting for them with Tris's brother and Peter. Again Tris must tell her brother that they lost a parent. They are orphans now. Together they escape the city and seek Amity for protection and hiding. The simulation may be over but the city is in a uproar now.

Amity allows them a safe house as long as they follow their rules but Tris and Four know that they won't be able to stay long. They will have to return to Dauntless and see what they can do to stop Erudite and their leader Jeanine all together.

Divergent kept me wanting more. It's one of those books that once you pick up, you just can't put it back down because it's addicting. It's full of action with some mystery and a hint of a love story. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

I am one who feels the need to read the book before I consider watching the movie. And even then movies are never as good as the books. Crossing my fingers that the movie is at least 1/3 of what the book is.

Stay tuned for more Divergent fun...

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Book Review

I just got done reading Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children. Before I review it, i'd like to share the book trailer:

"A tense, moving, and wonderously strange first novel. The photographs and the text work together brilliantly to create an unforgettable story." John Green, author of The Fault In Our Stars

I've seen this book in the stores many times and thought "What an odd cover". I wasn't sure if I even wanted to read it, let alone if I would like it. I read the back cover several but still it didn't seem to really entice me into reading it.

Each time I browsed the book aisle (which was every time I went into a store), this little girl's face stuck out from all the rest. Still I wasn't sure. Every time I saw the book it was as if the little girl kept saying "read me". Metaphorically of course! Something about her and her oddness just drew me in until one day, after leaving the store, I kept thinking about her. I wanted to read her story. I wanted to know more about this strange little levitating girl on the cover. That was the hook, line and sinker.

I went back the very next day and picked up the book. I was at the tail end of Ascend by Amanda Hocking so this strange book, with its strange little girl had to sit there for two days, starring at me.

Finally I was able to sit there, book and hand and contemplate it. I've never put so much thought into reading a book before I had even read it.

First off you have a little girl wearing a crown, with a stern look on her face...levitating of all things. It struck me as "peculiar". She's a pretty little girl, with long curly hair and the more I looked at her, the  more she reminded me of someone I know (I won't be naming any names). I knew the book was full of vintage photographs that the author, Ransom Riggs, had worked into the story. I thought the similarities to this little levitating girl and the one that  I know could possibly be very distantly related since they bear so much resemblance. Really they could be twins only the little girl I know is much much younger.

Then you have the book title. Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children. I wanted to know why the name Peregrine was chosen. The name Peregrine is an aristocratic name from England. It never made it to the US because it was viewed at eccentric. Peregrine is also a breed of falcon.

The peregrine falcon is also historically known as the duck hawk in North America and is a bird of prey.

These facts only peeked my curiosity as to who this Miss Peregrine might be and why her children were peculiar. So I cracked open the book and began to read.

Warning spoiler alert below:

The story is written from Jacob's point of view. Jacob is a 17 year old boy with a Jewish Grandfather, Abe who fought in World War 2 against the Nazi's. Jacob grew up hearing stories of his Grandfathers childhood. How his parents sent him to live on an island with kids like him to save him from the Nazi's. Jacob was told stories of a big fairy tale house, on an island where the sun always shone. Stories of kids who could do amazing things.

A boy who was invisible.
A girl who held fire in her hands.
Emma

A boy who could make anything come alive.
A girl who could float in thin air.
Olive

A girl who was so strong she could lift cars.
Bronwyn

A girl with a mouth on the back of her head through which she ate.
Claire

A wise Miss Peregrine, the bird, who took care of all these children and more.
Alma Peregrine

Abe told Jacob about the monsters he fought to keep his people safe. Everyone had assumed he was referring to the Nazi's and would fabricate stories about them. He talked about a monster that looked like a man, only he had tentacles coming out of his mouth.

These monsters were called Hallowgast and they ate peculiar's. These were the things nightmares were made up.

Jacob always loved his Grandfathers stories. As he got older he questioned the photographs and stories but still told his Grandfather that he believed. One day that all changed. He was bullied at school for believing in fairy's and pantsed. He came home and told his Grandfather that he no longer believed in his silly stories. That put an end to Grandfathers story telling days.

One day Jacob gets a call from his frantic Grandfather who seems to be in a frenzy and "loosing his mind". Abe says that he needs his key to his weapons cabinet that the monsters are coming. Jacob goes to check on his Grandfather to find him dieing in the woods. His last words to Jacob were  "Find the bird. In the loop. On the other side of the old mans grave. September 3rd, 1940. Emerson-the letter. Tell them what happened Yakob". This only confuses him more. Jacob sees the monster with the tentacles before it disappeared. He tells his parents. They put him into therapy fearing that the loss of his Grandfather has lead to a mental breakdown.

Jacob's therapist felt that helping to clean out his Grandfathers house would help with dealing with loosing him. It would give him closure. It only lead to more questions. Jacobs father and Aunt didn't want him to keep anything. They felt everything needed to be trashed, sold or given away. For Jacobs 17th birthday his Aunt surprises him with a gift from his grandfather. It was a book, The Selected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, with Jacobs name written inside with his Grandfathers writing.
"To Jacob Magellan Portman and the worlds he has yet to discover"

Inside Jacob finds a letter to Grandfather from Peregrine. Finding this letter only makes Jacob want to go to the island and find these people more. He's desperate to know how much of his Grandfathers stories are true.

Jacob therapist, Golan, works with Jacob to overcome the loss of his Grandfather. Golan gets Jacob to tell him about the stories his Grandfather told him about the peculiar children and the island he grew up on. Then he encourages Jacob to go to the island and visit the house so that Jacob can see for himself that his Grandfathers stories were just stories. Golan feels that subconsciously Jacob believes his Abe's stories to be true and that is causing anxiety and nightmares.

After Golan signs off on a trip to the island, Jacob and his father Franklin head out for an adventure of a life time.

When they arrive at the island, Jacob is told that no one lives at the old house anymore but he refuses to give up searching. He has to see it for himself. No one on the island knows anything about Miss Peregrine or the children.

When Jacob discovers the house, he is disappointed to find that the house is deserted and that it's run down and half blown up from when the Nazi's bombed the island. After days of searching through the house, he finally finds proof that this was once Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children when he finds a trunk full of pictures just like the ones his Grandfather showed him.

During one afternoon, while in the basement sorting through pictures he hears footsteps. He's unsure of what to think. This suddenly he hears their voices, children calling out for his Grandfather. When the children discover that its not Abe they take off running. Jacob chases them until they split up and ends up following one girl. He follows her through the bogs and into a cain which the island is known for. But the girl gets away.

He comes out of the cain and heads back to town determined to tell his fathers that he's done and going home only he finds himself in another time. The cain turned about to be a portal to the loop September 3rd 1940. The girl, Emma, puts a knive to his throat and he encounters the invisible boy, Millard, for the first time. They take him back to Miss Peregrine because Emma doesn't believe his story that he is Abe's grandson. She thinks he is something called a wright. A wright turns about to be a Hallogast who ate enough peculiar flesh to pass as human again. They spend their time feeding the Hallogast and hunting peculiar's. Unlike the Hallogast, they can pass through into loops.

Miss Peregrine knows that Jacob is indeed Abe's grandson. Jacob breaks the horrible news of his Grandfathers passing and turns out that it was a Hallogast that killed him.

This is just the beginning of the journey Jacob and his newly found friends go through. There is a lot of mystery and suspense and I just can't bring myself to ruin it all for you.

I give this book a 5 out of 5. Once I picked it up, it was very hard to put down. The story draws you in and entices you, leaving you hungry to know more.

I love how the author took these old orphaned photographs and Incorporated them into his story, making the story flow and leaving you with the impression that this fictional story is possible. I am in love with this series and the masterpeice that is Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

So what are peculiar's?
Peculiar's are those that aren't like "normal" humans. Some can float, or create fire. Some are invisible or super strong. There are many things that can make you a peculiar including Jacob and his Grandfathers ability to see the Hallogast. No one, human or peculiar can see them except for Abe and Jacob. That's their power.

Seriously if you love a good work of fiction, just love to read, then put this book on your to-read list. It's worth the read.

In other news, I found out that Tim Burton is making this book into a movie and I couldn't think of a better director to do so!

Ascend by Amanda Hocking - Book Three in the Trylle Series

Ascend, the third book in the Trylle series was no let down. True to form, Amanda Hocking hit this one out of the park. The only thing I wish is that there were more books to the series.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers and basically outlines the story.

In this third book Wendy has taken over the day to day running of the Kingdon of Foerning. Her father Oren, king of the Vittra wants nothing more than to take over Foerning and rule both kingdoms. He had promised not to attack the Trylle people of Foerning but they soon find that because of how he words this, the other Trylle communities can be attacked without breaking the truce. They discover this when Oren sends his hobgobblins to attack another Trylle community.

Wendy and a few other friends head out to repair the attacked community and to take back any survivors who have no homes to go back too. During their one night stay, Tove has over exhausted his powers and seemingly looses his mind. He hits Wendy for reasons she can't fathom and Loki comes to her rescue.

In one night of passion she gives herself to Loki, promising him only that one night.

One night Wendy sneaks off with Loki and returns to the Vittra King to make a bargain. That she will hand over Foerning when she becomes Queen, after she gets everyone to agree to follow Oren so that she can save lives. Of course this is just to keep Oren from attacking the kindgom the minute she takes the crown. She does what she thinks is best for the kingdom.

Wendy's mother Elora paints visions, and one day shows everyone a painting of everyone in the castle dead. They knew it had to be the Vittra because king Oren already threatened to take over the kingdom as soon as Elora died and Wendy took the crown.

In an attempt to change the outcome of the painting, they must devise a plan. After much debate Wendy realized the only way to change the outcome is to do something Foerning has never done before and attack the Vittra before the Vittra can attack them. In the history of Foerning, they have never attacked, but has always waiting to be attacked.

Before they attack the Vittra, Wendy's husband Tove tells her he doesn't think he can be with her anymore that he wants to be with someone he loves but promises to always stand by her side. Wendy tells him that she know's he's gay and that if that's what he chooses to do then she would support that. After all they should both be happy. Wendy didn't love him either, she loved Loki. They decide to annual  their marriage but not until after they attack the Vittra because if something happens to Wendy, she wants Tove to run the Kingdom.

Elora dies and Wendy is forced to take the crown. She decides to do a quiet quick so that they can have the upper hand on the Vittra.

That night they take their army to the Vittra and attack. Wendy was able to cut of Orens head after he kills Loki. Watching Loki be killed unlocked her powers and she was able to use them against Oren.

Oren's Queen Sara is happy that Oren's rein of terror is over and helps to bring Loki back to life with the help of Wendy's power.

After all is said and done Loki is alive. Her marriage with Tove was annualed. She married Loki and to their surprise that one passionate night they spent together before they were married left her pregnant.

Torn By Amanda Hocking

True to form, Amanda Hocking hit this one out of the park. A great second book to the Trylle trilogy. Torn gets more involved with Wendy and her life at the palace as well as some history of the Trylle. She finds herself in a love triangle. She arranged to marry her good friend and Markis Tove, still has feelings for Finn and feeling new emotions for Loki. Wendy wants to make the right decision for her kingdom, and that's been decreed as marrying Tove, whom she finds out is secretly gay. She knows he will always defend and protect her and that will be happy but what kind of marriage would that be. Especially with a mother in law from hell who wants her son to overthrow Wendy and take the crown for his family. Tove however is loyal and refuses to do such a thing. Finn doesn't like ge idea of Wendy being with anyone, but since he can't be with her he would rather she be with Tove because of him being gay. Wendy is angry that Finn would push her into a marriage where her husband and her would never be in love, instead of encouraging her to find love. Loki is still fighting for Wendy. He wants her to marry him and leave both kingdoms behind. Let them fight it out themselves. Who cares as long as they are happy. Wendy is torn between love and responsibility.
