The Immortals By Alyson Noel

I just finished The Immortals Series written by Alyson Noel. This series is comprised of 6 books:

1) Evermore  (***)
2) Blue Moon (***)
3) Shadowland (***)
4) Dark Flame (***)
5) Night Star (**)
6) Everlasting (***)

The series follows a young girl, Ever, whose been reincarnated over the ages and her soul mate Damen who is immortal. Every few centuries, Ever gets reincarnated as someone new. Damen finds her and they again fall madly in love, only to be separated by Ever's death before they could ever do more than a simple kiss. Come to find out, Damen's ex-wife Drina is to blame for Ever's deaths.

Once Drina is dealt with, Ever and Damen have new challenges that stand in their way from truly being together. Their love is put to the test time and time again.

I'm a stubborn person and I stuck with this series even though I wanted to drop it like a hot potato. It was hard to stick with these books and I did something I absolutely HATE doing and very very rarely, if ever, do. I skipped through the last two books because I was so bored with them.

Don't get me wrong. The story line was good. It just seemed like it was dragged out way too much. The author could have compacted everything into 2, maybe 3 books and cut out the excess. It's really not a series I would recommend someone to read.

Cinder: Lunar Chronicles Book 1

Cinder
Lunar Cronicles Book 1
By Marissa Meyer

Cinder is about a cyborg girl who in many ways is treated just like Cinderella by her step mother Adri and one of her two step sisters. The only friends she has is her youngest steo sister Peony, who has a huge celebrity crush on Prince Kai, and the household android Iko, who has a quirky personaity thanks to a deffective personality chip. Cinders adopted father died shortly after adopting her from the letumoses plague and was left in Adri's ruthless care.

I admire Cinder for overcoming diveristy, being a cyborg in a community where most look down on them and feel they are nothing more than an abomination. Little do they know Cinder is special. She's not like anyone on earth. She is the key to defeating the cruel and evil queen of Luna, Levana, who wishes to overtake all the unions of earth one by one until she rules all. Cinder is the key because she is the Lunar Princess Selene, the one who Levana tried to kill as a toddler, and thought she succeeded, to become Queen.

Book Discussion Questions:

1)What parallels can you draw between the Cindrella fairy tale and Cinder? Is there a Fairy God Mother in CInder ad who do you think it is?
As I state above Cinder is a lot like Cinderella in the aspect that she is treated poorly. As a servant versus a family member. Just like in Cinderella, Cinder's father died when she was young leaving her in the care of her step mother. In both Cinder and Cinderella, they are banned from going to the ball, but attend anyway. Iko played the part of the mice who made Cinderella's dress by leaving Peony's discarded dress in Cinder's work space.  In the epic scene where Cinderella runs out of the castle leaving behind a glass slipper, she is running from her truth, not wanting the prince to see that she isn't who she appears to be. In the story of Cinder, Cinder runs from the ballroom trying to escape not only the truth that she is a cyborg, something she tried to hide always, but escape for her life because Queen Levana wanted to see her dead. Like in Cinderella, Cinder has a "fairy godmother". Doctor Erland plays the part of Ciinder's fairy godmother. He gives Cinder the antidote to the plague her sister is dieing from and goes into the jail after Cinder is arrested and bestows a new cyborg foot and hand upon her. The hand came equiped with everything she needed to break out of jail and flee the commonwealth.

2)What does it mean to be human? Why do you think in Cinder's world cyborgs are thought to be less than human? What about Lunars? What are real-world parallels you can draw between the discrimination against cyborgs and Lunars to race, disability and class?
To be human means to have emotion. To feel. In Cinder's world, cyborgs are thought to be less than human because they have robotic parts to replace those they lost. Because of these repotic parts, like Cinders hand and leg, people in Cinder's world believe they must be more macine than human and therefore have no feelings or thoughts of their own. It's one thing to have an adroid but another to be a cyborg. They view this as an abomination because these people who were turned into cyborgs were meant to die, not to be saved by recieving metal body parts. The dicrimination between cyborgs and Lunars is a lot like real-world discrimination against race, religion sexuality because people don't like what they don't know or understand. They can't understand what it's like to be a cyborg or why anyone woud want to be one so therefore they don't like it. It all cycles back to ignorance. People don't understand dissability. I've experienced this with my own son. He has many medical problems including a feeding tube. When people see the feeding tube they freak out because they don't understand. Because of the tube he is treated differently. When he was smaller he was on oxygen and a gtube feed 24-7 and when we had to take him out people would give us dirty looks and judge the situation. They thought we were horrible parents because our kid was sick and they couldn't understand that this was how he was born and that it was no ones fault. I even had people shy away from us thinking they could catch whatever he must have.

3) Cinder has many cyborg abilities. What cyborg abilities would you like?
I think the ability to tell a lie would be a blessing and a curse but it would come in handy when the kids try to get away with something.

Cinder was exciting and fun to read. I give it 5 out of 5 stars on goodreads.com

Allegiant By Veronica Roth

WARNING CONTAINS MASSIVE SPOILERS!!!
🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫📖🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫

All I could think when I picked up this book was "I can't wait to find out what happens next".

After I read the but all I felt was this....

So my rating for Alligiant is mucho get just because of the ending.

For me, with Alligiant, it seems that nothing mattered that lead up to the ending after I read the ending. And nothing that came after the death of the main character mattered one bit.

How?! Why kill off Tris?!?! Seriously?! What was the point of making her immune to the death serum if she was just going to get killed off my a gun shot wound?!?

Everything else was insubstantial my all means.

The only reason I'm bothering to read the next book in the series, Four, is because I'm hoping it's one of those books that goes back and tells something from his point of view instead of Tris's because that would mean that I can go back to her being alive, when the world of Divergent was right and just.

I became so invested in these characters that now it seems like the whole (Divergent) world truely is a scam.

And that's when I think "is that the plan?"
In the books they learn that their world is not what they thought. It's devastated them and changes everything. Was killing off Tris a way to make up feel what the characters were feeling when they learned their world was not what they thought it was?

I was already invested. I already fly what they had felt. Why couldn't things have gone another way?!

And then I think to myself "oh geez, I'm mourning a fictional character", and I just don't are because I've grown to love and hate them in so many ways.

So to whomever (hmm hmm Veronica Roth!) decided to kill of Tris... Gold job!! The world is much grimmer now without a heroine like Tris to save the day!!

Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Insurgent is book 2 in the Divergent series by Veronica Roth. Divergent followed Tris as she changed factions and found friends and learned about her Divergence. Book two, Insurgent, follows Trish as she is forced to make life or death decisions and dealing with the consequences. In Insurgent, Trish must deal with the deaths of both her parents as well as shooting her friend to save her own life. She has to face the fact that everything she grew up knowing to be true and right, has just crumbled around her.

Jeanine Mathews, leader of the Erudite, wants to rule the factions and eliminate the ones she deems useless. After Jeanine ran the simulation that forced the Dauntless to attack Abnegation, and kill innocents, the Dauntless broke in half. Those that agreed and followed Jeanine, split off and continued to fight with the Erudite for a new world. They are considered traitors of their faction.

Those Dauntless who are loyal to their faction return to the Dauntless compound. When Dauntless split, they realized all their former leaders were either traitors or dead and are forced to appoint new leaders. Four being one of them.

When Jeanine using simulations to bring a message to the Dauntless, telling them to deliver a Divergent or everyday two people will die, Tris feels she is forced to lie to four, promising him she won't go, but goes anyway. She feels this is the only way to safe the people she loves.

At Erudite compound, Jeanine basically tortures Tris, putting her through simulation after simulation trying to find a serum that works on the divergent. She finds out her brother is a traitor, working with Jeanine as well and Four turns himself over to Jeanine as well. This angers and worries Trish because what was the point of her turning herself over to safe her loved ones, if her loved ones were just going to put themselves in danger as well.

One day Jeanine grew too annoyed that no simulation serum worked on Tris that she decides to execute her and be done with it. Peter, who tried to kill her during Dauntless initiation, is working for Erudite as well and is personally in charge of transporting Tris to and from her cell for simulations. Peter escorts her to her execution. Jeanine administered the serum that would kill Tris then Peter took her body away. Only Tris can't understand why she can still see and hear everything if she's dead. Then Peter starts talking to her. He had switched out the killing serum with a paralytic to fake Tris's death.

Peter takes Tris to Four's cell and frees him, then proceeds to lead them all to escape the Erudite compound. From here they run to the Abnegation compound where Tris finds that the Dauntless has banded together with the factionless to fight against Janine and the Erudite and Dauntless who follow her.

This book is fast passed and full of action. I really enjoyed reading Divergent but Insurgent was even better. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

Small But Strong

Tris setting a new standard for shirt girls everywhere and breaking the statistic.
Being a short girl myself,
I have been judged by my size.
What they fail to see is that just because I am small,
doesn't mean that I am weak.
I am smart and I have my own strengths.
One being that everyone underestimates me.
A big thanks to author Veronica Roth for making her main character small.

(Quote from Divergent)

ONE CHOICE
DETERMINES YOUR LOYALTIES-
FOREVER

Take the aptitude test to find out which faction you belong to:

My choices demonstrate the virtues of more than one Faction, scoring highest in Erudite and Amity. Here is my core from highest to lowest:

Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent is the first book in the series by Veronica Roth. The book is written about a utopia of sorts. There are 5 factions that make up this city. Each faction values a different trait that they believe is what is important in life and believe that the other faction's traits are what causes uproar, and problems.

Abnegation believes is selflessness. To put others needs ahead of their own. They believe that thinking of yourself and being selfish is the downfall to society. They are the leaders because they put everyone's needs above their own.

Candor believes in honesty. They feel that if you are honest (frankly so even) that you will have nothing to hide because secrets and lies are the downfall to society. They believe dishonesty makes evil possible.

Erudite values intelligence above all else. They feel that the lack of knowledge inevitably leads to lack of understanding and lack of understanding disconnect. Disconnect leads to conflict and the only logical solution to conflict is knowledge.

Dauntless value being brave. They believe that cowardice is to blame for the worlds injustices. They believe that peace is hard-won and that you have to fight for peace.

Amity value peace. To have peace you must trust, be self-sufficient, forgive, and be kind.

Each child is raised in with their parents in their factions. In Tris's case, she grew up in Abnegation. All the children from all the factions attend school together until they turn 16. Each year, all the 16 year olds go though an aptitude test (a simulation) which is to tell them what faction they belong with. 24 hours later they go through the choosing ceremony where each 16 year old must choose a faction. They have the freedom of choice, even if their test says one faction, they can still choose a different one.

Once they choose a faction and the ceremony comes to an end, the initiates (the 16 year old's) must go with their chosen factions to go through initiation, and training. If you don't make initiation then you become factionless. Factionless are considered the scum. Looked down on. No one wants to be Factionless.

Warning spoilers ahead.

Divergent follows the story of a girl, Tris, who must choose her own path in life. She was raised Abnegation but always struggles with being selfless like the Abnegation should be. When she takes her aptitude test, her world turns upside down. She was told that the test wasn't conclusive for her. That this means she is something else all together, Divergent. She is told that being Divergent is dangerous and that she must never tell anyone that she is. Her test instructor erased her test results and reported that she tested Abnegation in order to protect her.

During the choosing ceremony her brother chooses to abandoned their upbringing as Abnegation and choose Erudite. Tris is shocked by this because he seemed to be the most selfless person she ever met. She feels betrayed that he kept this secret form her. But she too abandons Abnegation for Dauntless. She feels that Dauntless is her best bet, where she must belong.

Their father is angered by their choices but of course can't say anything because they are rushed off to be with their chosen factions. Their mother however smiles approvingly and loving to them.

Tris finds that Dauntless is harder than she expected but freeing. She learns to fight, shoot guns, and be brave. During initiation they must face 3 stages, and still only 10 initiates will become members. The rest will become factionless.

Tris finds friends that stick beside her through initiation. They stick up for one another and help each other out. Slowly she changes. She tattoo's herself. The first, 3 birds flying towards her heart. One for each of her family members that she left behind when she left Abnegation. The second tattoo being the Dauntless symbol. The third was done in secret, the symbol of Abnegation, the faction she left behind because she feels it'll always be a part of her.

The other transfer initiates (those from other factions like Tris) have found it hard to leave their families behind. Some cry at night when they think no one can hear. During stage 2 of initiation they must go through simulations to face their fears. This leaves the initiates on edge and touchy. Tris however refuses to break down. She begins to think that there's something wrong with her.

After a week and a half, all factions have visiting day. This is when the initiates Families can come visit them. Most families of those who transferred Factions don't visit because they feel betrayed. Tris is surprised when her mother shows up. Her mother supports her and loves her still. Tris begins to think that her mother wasn't always Abnegation but possibly Dauntless. Her mother tells her that she knows that Tris is Divergent and that she must be careful. She gets the same warning again, that it's dangerous to be Divergent but her mother refuses, like everyone else who knows about it, to tell her more about it. Instead her mother asks Tris to go to her brother in Erudite and have him research the serum used in the aptitude test. When Tris asks why her mother doesn't just go visit him herself, she finds that Erudite will not allow Abnegation into their compound headquarters so it must be Tris that goes.

Only 3 people know that Tris is Divergent. Her mother. The test instructor, who is also the Dauntless tattoo artist. And Four, her Dauntless initiation instructor. All have warned her to be careful and keep the attention off herself.

The time comes for stage 3 of the initiation process. Each initiate must go into the fear landscape and face all their fears. One after another. After which they will be ranked. At the end, they will get their final ranking to find out if they make Dauntless membership or will forever be factionless. Tris faces less fears than others and overcomes them faster. She is congratulated by the Dauntless leaders and Four. She is told that she made membership and all members are getting a tracking advice implanted in them via shot. This is in case they go missing and must be found. At least this is what they are told. Tris nervously agrees, after all this is what shes worked hard for.

During the celebration dinner, ranks are posted. Tris is surprised to find that she ranked over all #1. This means she gets to pick her job within the Dauntless compound, before all the other initiates. This is a good thing because she can pick a job far enough away from the leaders too keep off their radar as a Divergent but also give her a decent job.

That night she wakes up to the sound of shuffling. She finds her friends are getting dressed. When she tries to talk to them she realizes that the whole dorm is dressing with blank stares on their faces. They don't realize when they are doing, like sleepwalkers. Tris follows her instinct and follows suit, trying to match every movement they make in fear of being found out that she is Divergent.

They go into rooms, dress in all black uniform, arm themselves with guns and get on the train. They go into Abnegation compound and end up attacking and killing Abnegation. Tris finds Four wide awake and realizes that he too is Divergent. They make a run for it but end up caught by Divergent soldiers and taken to Jeanine the Erudite leader, who is behind the attack. She had developed the so called trackers that all (but the leaders) of Dauntless had been injected with that day. Turns out they were a device that allowed her to put everyone through a real life simulation and do what she wanted.

Jeanine injects Four with a different device that she created just for Divergent's and put him under her control. He then attacks Tris, almost chocking her to death until Jeanine commands him to stop and had her soldiers take him to the control room to monitor the simulation program.

Tris is knocked out and when she wakes up, she finds herself facing one of her worst fears, but in reality this time. She's in a glass box that is slowly filling with water so that she will drown. She tried to escape but is too weak from blood loss from being shot. Luckily she is saved by her mother who shoots and breaks the glass freeing Tris. They make a run for it. This is when Tris's suspicions of her mother being Dauntless before Abnegation are proven true when she sees her mothers Dauntless tattoo. She also discovers that her mother too is Divergent and the reason she choose to Abnegation, thinking it was the safest.

They try to escape the Dauntless sleepwalking soldiers but they can't lead them back to the group of Abnegation in hiding. Tris's mom tells her to run and get to safety while she distracts the soldiers. Tris ends up watching her mother die. Before she can make it to safety she is stopped by a soldier, Will her friend. She doesn't want to have to shoot him and tries talking him out of shooting her and letting her go but he isn't himself and she has no choice but to shoot and kill him.

She makes it to safety, finding her father, brother, Four's father and many neighbors. She has to deliver the news of her mothers death to her brother and father. After they come up with a plan to split up. A few will go with her to the Dauntless compound and shut down the simulation while the other run to safety to Amity outside the city gates.

With her she takes her brother, fathers and Four's father despite her protests. She leads them to the compound where they have to encounter many Dauntless initiate task's to get in. Jump onto a moving train. Jump off a moving train onto a roof. Jump off the roof from 7 stories high into a hole where a net is waiting to catch them. This is the back way into the compound and the safest.

They encounter many soldiers and have to fight back by shooting them. Tris finds Peter, her arch enemy and fellow initiate made member who tried to kill her, awake and not under the simulation. She shoots him in his shooting arm, rendering him useless and threatening his life if he doesn't tell her where the control room is.

She leaves her brother and Four's father behind to watch over Peter while her and her father goes to shut down the simulation. When they reach the floor the control is on they are met at the elevator by soldiers with guns ready to shoot. They shoot the soldiers down but more are headed their way. Tris's father leads them down a hall away from Tris and she watches him die like she did her mother. But it wasn't for nothing because she makes it to the control room where she finds Four. Four puts a gun to her head and she keep trying to talk him out of the simulation. She knows his brain is stronger because he is Divergent. Just when she thought she was about to die at the hand of the man whom she loves, he drops the gun and wakes up.

Together they shut down the simulation and take the hard drive with them so the simulation can't be turned on again. Four isn't happy to see his father waiting for them with Tris's brother and Peter. Again Tris must tell her brother that they lost a parent. They are orphans now. Together they escape the city and seek Amity for protection and hiding. The simulation may be over but the city is in a uproar now.

Amity allows them a safe house as long as they follow their rules but Tris and Four know that they won't be able to stay long. They will have to return to Dauntless and see what they can do to stop Erudite and their leader Jeanine all together.

Divergent kept me wanting more. It's one of those books that once you pick up, you just can't put it back down because it's addicting. It's full of action with some mystery and a hint of a love story. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

I am one who feels the need to read the book before I consider watching the movie. And even then movies are never as good as the books. Crossing my fingers that the movie is at least 1/3 of what the book is.

Stay tuned for more Divergent fun...
